Meditation in Nature

Come into the peace of wild things . . .

If you are seeking a more inward expression for practicing your faith, Meditation in Nature may be just for you.

Meetings take place at the Gans Creek Wildlife Area the third Sunday each month from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. and are sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Green Sanctuary Committee and Friends of Rockbridge.

These two photos, taken on August 21, 2011, show the natural cathedral-like setting
at the Gans Creek Wildlife Area where the Meditation in Nature gatherings take place.

Our focus is being at home in Nature and building a connection between spiritual practice and environmental consciousness. The format of the gatherings is silent meditation with some opportunity to share insights.

Location and Directions: Meetings take place in a old growth woodland that is part of Gans Creek Wildlife Area. To get there:

  • Turn south from Grindstone Parkway onto Bearfield Road.

  • Continue on Bearfield Road past Nifong Boulevard and through another stop sign, to the point where Bearfield Road ends in a parking lot that serves Gans Creek Wildlife Area.

  • From the parking lot, take the footpath that leads off to the right (west), and walk for about 10 minutes along the ridge until you enter a portion of old growth forest.

  • You will know when arrive because it feels like a cathedral with very tall trees and no undergrowth.

We sit in a circle under the trees for our gatherings. You should plan on arriving at the parking lot no later than 8:45 a.m. so that we can be settled for meditation by 9:00 a.m. There will be a fire if it is cold. Bring a folding chair or stool. Wear long pants in tick season.
