Fundraising

Our Fundraising Committee, which reports directly to the Board of Trustees, plans and carries out fundraising activities to provide additional funds for general church operations and special projects. This page features information about special fundraising projects.

Great Lakes Scrip Center Gift Cards Project

Our most recent fundraising project is the sale of gift cards through the Great Lakes Scrip Center. Here's how we raise funds from this project:

  • Our church orders the gift cards for you.

  • You pay the face value for the cards you order.

  • Our church receives a discount on each order.

  • The discount becomes revenue for our church.

Our first three orders for gift cards in $380.70 in revenue for our general fund.

The following questions and answers describe the program in more detail:

How is this fundraising project “pain free”?

  • You do not have to sell anything. You can feel good about generating revenue for our church when you make regular personal or gift purchases that you would make anyway. You can use these gift cards for gifts or to purchase groceries, clothing, restaurant meals, books, music, toys, gifts, gas and more. Cards like those shown below and hundreds more are available.

How is the discount determined?

  • Each business determines the face value and the discount offered for its cards.

Can we trust Great Lakes Scrip Center?

  • GLSC has belonged to the Better Business Bureau for over 10 years and is rated A+.

Where/when can I purchase cards?

  • All Sundays in December, volunteers will be available to assist you at the Great Lakes Scrip Center Display Table in the Greeting Area. There will be printed packets where you can look for different businesses alphabetically or by type of business. These lists also are on the GLSC website at http://www.GLScrip.com. A computer will be available at the table if you want more information from the website.

  • The gift card sales schedule is not set yet for 2012.

How do I buy the Cards?

  • Go to the GLSC Display Table in the greeting area, where the poster lists the steps for ordering.

  • Decide which card(s) you want to order.

  • For each card you want, record the following on your order sheet:

    • The name of the card

    • How many of that card you want

    • The face value of that card

  • Once you have completed this information for each card, please sign your name and write your email address and phone number on your order sheet.

  • Go to the cashier, and pay for the card(s) you are ordering with cash or a check. Checks should be made out to “UU Church” with “gift card” on the memo line.

Where can I get more information?

  •  Check out the GLSC table display and handouts in the Greeting Area.

  • Explore the Great Lakes Scrip Center website at http://www.GLScrip.com.

  • Contact Marian Hjelmfelt, Project Coordinator

In mid-January our Fundraising Committee pointed out that our church can benefit from gift card purchases for gas and auto repairs and supplies. See the flyer immediately below.

In February 2012 the fundraising committee suggested uses for spent gift cards. See the following flyer.

In late February 2012, the Fundraising Committee provided the following information about how church members and friends planning a trip can help support our church by patronizing GLSC participating businesses:

eScrip Fund-Raising Project

Another current project is promoting the "eScrip" program which gives church members and friends the opportunity to have a percentage of their purchases contributed to the church when they shop or dine out.

At present Schnucks Supermarket is the only local store participating in eScrip, but we expect other businesses to join the program as time goes on. However, a number of online retailers participate in eScrip.

At this time the following 10 local restaurants participate in eScrip:

    Bleu Restaurant and Wine Bar
    Boone Tavern and Restaurant
    Casablanca Mediterranean Grill
    Chris McD's Restaurant
    Deuce Pub & Pit
    Jazz Louisiana Kitchen
    Romano's Macaroni Grill
    Room 38
    Sky Hi Grill
    Which Wich

To use eScrip at Schnucks, you must pick up a Schnucks eScrip card either in the greeting area at church or from the customer service counter at Schnucks and register the card with eScrip. Then, to ensure that a percentage of your purchases at Schnucks will be given to the church, you must show your Schnucks eScrip card scanned by the cashier every time you check out.

For purchases at restaurants and some other locations, a percentage will be given to the church if you charge the purchase to a credit or debit card you have registered with eScrip.

For online retailers which participate in eScrip, there are two ways to make sure your purchases benefit our church:

     1. For all participating online retailers, you can go to the retailer's website through the following link in order for your purchase to benefit the church:

http://shopping.escrip.com/cgi/shop.plx?pid=5400&sid=500729407

     2. For most participating online retailers (Amazon.Com being a notable exception), you can also download and install a browser plug-in called "AutoEARN" that is available for most common browsers and will allow you to benefit the church without going through the link above to reach the retailer's site. The AutoEARN plug-in is available via a link at the top of the web page mentioned above and is shown by the red arrow in the following screenshot:

A tutorial on how to sign up for eScrip and register your Schnucks eScrip card and your credit and debit cards appears below. Many thanks to Rob Bartel for taking the initiative to produce the initial draft of the tutorial.

Marian Hjelmfelt is coordinating the eScrip fund-raising project for us. She said: "I was familiar with Schnucks, so it was an easy place to test out this program. I picked up a Schnucks eScrip card at their Customer Service window and followed the directions on the card to register. Whenever I made a purchase at Schnucks, I had to show my Schnucks eScrip card when I checked out (my phone number did not work). At the end of the month, our Church received a percent of what I had spent that month. The trick is to remember to show your card! At the eScrip.com website, you can find the regional and national participating companies. Conditions for participating vary by company. My purchases did not bring much money to the church, however, the more people who use this opportunity, the more the church will benefit."

eScrip Tutorial

The eScrip tutorial appears below in browser-readable format, or you can download and print it in PDF format. If you use the browser-readable version below, it is suggested that you open the eScrip website in a different tab or window so you can easily switch back and forth between this page and the eScrip website.

eScrip is a site that connects people who want to make directed donations to a charity with businesses that want to attract customers and/or make directed charitable contributions. It is easy to register your credit card numbers, and once that's done it normally requires no action on your part to have the donations made. Note: Schnucks is an exception - you have to show the cashier your Schnucks card for UU Church to receive their donation.

There are three types of merchants eScrip has arrangements with:

Restaurant and some other businesses contributions are automatic when you use a registered credit card, but for the online retailers you must go through the link above to get to the retailer.

To sign up, go to http://eScrip.com and you'll see this web page:

The page is confusing (the whole site is confusing, for that matter), but you need to click on the link circled in red above that says "Existing members sign in for a personalized home page," even if you are initially registering with eScrip.

On the web page that appears next, click on the "register now" link on the right side, circled in red in the screenshot shown below.

After you click on the "register now" link, you'll see the web page shown in the screenshot below.

On this page, make sure the "Group Name" button is selected and then type "UU Church of Columbia" in the search box (circled in red in the screenshot above).

Next click the "Search" button.

After you do that, you will see the web page shown in the following screenshot.

Now click the "UU Church Of Columbia" link circled in red in the screenshot above.

Next you will see the following web page:

On the web page shown immediately above, assuming that you do not want your eScrip purchases to support any other groups, simply click the "Next" button.

You will then see the following page where you need to enter your personal information:

Note: eScrip has been a Better Business Bureau member for more than 10 years and has an A+ rating. In over five years of belonging to eScrip, Rob Bartel has never been contacted by eScrip, so Rob believes you can feel safe sharing the information eScrip requires for participation.

When you are done entering your information, click the "Next" button shown in the screenshot above.

You will now see the web page shown in the following screenshot.

On this page, click the down-arrow for a blank "Card Type" and select "Schnucks eScrip Card." The web page should now look like this:

You should have already obtained a Schnucks eScrip card either at Schnucks or at church. Be sure to type the number of the card in the box adjacent to "Schnucks eScrip Card" on the preceding screen.

Now click the "Next" button and you will see the following web page:

On this page you can register your credit and debit card numbers. All eScrip has is the number to use for routing the contributions. eScrip never charges anything to your credit card. eScrip has been around for a long time and you can feel safe using its service. By registering your cards, any time you make a purchase at a participating merchant, a percentage of the total charged will be sent to the church.

When you are done registering your credit and debit cards, click the "Next" button.

Now you will see the web page shown in the following screenshot.

You will most likely skip the page shown above. Just click the "next" button to continue.

Next you will see a "Supporter Registration Confirmation Page." Review the information to make sure it is correct and make any changes necessary.

Now click the "Confirm" button to continue to a summary screen which will provide your "Supporter Number." Be sure to record the number.

Finally, continue to the next page where you will create a password. That page is shown in the following screenshot.

Your password will be used to log into the MyeScrip page where you can maintain your information. Choose a password and click Enter. Be sure to record or otherwise preserve your password.

At that point you are registered, and you can explore the site. In particular, you can review the merchants available in various parts of the country. There are few local merchants in Columbia, but there are several web sites that participate.
